The Drums – The Drums

Reviving a genre. The Beach Boys would be proud, maybe, actually I have no idea, maybe they’d be jealous. Maybe you think I just made a blasphemous statement. Whatev. In my mind and my eyes this is the band that has brought back Beach Rock. Well there were a few bands I featured this year that kind of touched on the sound and did a fantastic job of it too I must say. But if there was one band that hit the nail on the head with the genre, this is it. Maybe to some it’s gimmicky and maybe those people listen to crappy music. Probably both. The Drums don’t just bring back a genre, they also do it justice, or better yet, take something from the past, breath life into it, and then spit shine it up until it looks brand new.

I grew up many a many a many night listening to the Beach Boys. You could bank on an album or two of theirs making its way round the record player at least one time through on the weekend, every weekend. So it’s not like this is something I haven’t been accustomed to hearing my whole life and all of a sudden I’m jumping on this “new” style of music. I know where it comes from, I loved it when I was a kid, and I’ve fallen back in love again today. So here’s to an amazing genre back in my life and amazing band doing it just right. That sorta rhymed. Bam. Check it.

Sleigh Bells – Treats

If there was a more unique album last year that actually didn’t sound like a mumbled jumbled mess of crappy music then please inform me of it. Because, this is quite possibly the most unique sound to come out since….idk maybe the whole MGMT/Vampire Weekend sort of emergence of sound from 08′. Then again you could probably attribute that to a lot of different bands from decades past. As far as Sleigh Bells goes, can you really attribute their sound to something coherent or popular from the past? I can’t, or at least don’t have the musical prowness to claim to know of anything. I have to say that in a lot of ways their uniqueness is their appeal to me. How they are able to take such a RAW sound and make it coherent enough to enjoy and crazy enough to lose yourself in it. I’m starting to sound to hipster for my own good. So to be less so, I’ll just say it ROCKS! Plain and simple. Plenty of people are going to say it’s too crazy or too over the top or too something…but isn’t that what makes it so great. There is a fine line between too much and wayyyyy too much and they pretty much straddle that thing like one of those tight rope walkers across two giant buildings. But they do it none the less. Perfectly.

When I heard their mixture of demo type tracks from back in 09′ I thought…WOW, when they actually get some production behind this stuff it’s going to be crazy good. And… it was. This is a popular pick for a lot of Top Album lists from last year, but while some people are going to pick it just to be cool, I’m going to pick it at my 5 spot cause I frickin’ rocked my ass off to it all day every day for a long period of time. I liked it, I loved it, I cherished it. Well I still do, although a short break is in due order after many a rock out sessions. My two fav tracks can be found here https://myuniversallanguage.wordpress.com/2010/09/24/let-me-say/.  For the crazyness go there, for a more laid back (if you can call it that) check the track here. Blah blah blah….I’m done. Check it.

Watching You Breakdown…

22 Jan

First Off….if you are reading this my site has moved here http://myuniversallanguage.com/

quick break from the list to bring you a new track from one of my favorite groups of all time. You know that one group, the one who can take a violin and incorporate it so seamlessly into a “punk” rock track. That beingYellowcard. Has it really been since 2007 since I’ve heard something new from them? Yes…yes it has! They broke up after their latest album, “Paper Walls”, which is one of my favorite albums of all time…then again so is their album, “Ocean Avenue”. And yet it seems like yesterday since I’d get in my car and drive and drive and drive and blast their music. Soooooo many memories.  So when I heard they were getting back together, you must know I was STOKED…so STOKED…very super STOKED. They most def pick up where they left off with a fantasticnew track, “For You, And Your Denial”. The track just dropped in iTunes so go cop it and then sit calmly (if that’s possible) as you await the release of their new album, “When You’re Through Thinking, Say Yes”, on March 22. Check it.

Two Door Cinema Club – Tourist History

So here’s the album that jumped up above Mumford & Sons to claim it’s spot on my list at #6. This album is easily one of the most complete albums of the year, but something it has going for it that most other complete albums had this year, is how much each track stood out alone. A lot of albums are good because of the way they flow and I’m not saying this one didn’t have that going for it as well. You could say this was an album of singles. By that I mean and I’m not kidding, nearly every song on this album could have been a single. Now what does that mean? Well you know how bands like to pick their most mainstream appealing or best song to release to radio station and whatever other musical outlet…they call that a single. Well I wouldn’t have been in the least bit surprised of them picking nearly any one of these tracks off this album. They all had that pizzazz or appeal that could make them a radio hit. They all had their uniqueness about them. They all stood out on their own. Now having said that, it makes you wonder how this album didn’t make it to the #1 spot on my list. Honestly, I wondered that myself listening to it the other day. I think my conclusion is I usually look at an album as a whole and more then about the music. It’s about the feeling I get. About what it reminds me of. About do I put it on when I’m feeling in a certain mood. I think all  or most the albums above that have a that going for them. This album, however, is more like what I put on when I just wanna listen to some catchy good tunes. Less emotional you could say. There isn’t a problem with that. It surely is a great album and I think if more people had given it a chance it would have made it to the top of others lists as well as mine. I heard a track on a video game the other day, I think NBA 2K11, and was like…”good for them”. So they are getting some recognition that they most def deserve. So go get your hands on this album and be expecting some great things out of this band coming soon. Check the link for a previous post, including a song by Hoodie Allen that samples a Two Door Cinema Club track. Then check a couple other tracks off the album and you can get a sense of what I mean by every song being single worthy. Check it.

Mumford & Sons – Sigh No More

This was a pretty tough choice and to be honest right before I started typing this up I made a switch between #7 & #6. So in other words, this was my #6, but now it’s #7. Not a huge deal I suppose. Usually I’ll listen to the album the day I plan on typing up my post and that’s what I did here. For the album you’ll now find at the #6 spot….idk it just had sooooo many good tracks it had to make the leap ahead. That’s not to say this isn’t one magnificent album, because it is, and #7 on my list is pretty dang high up there, especially considering how much I liked the albums above and below it. So let’s get to my mini review on this thang.

Well firstly you can check out my previous post that tells the tale about how their single, “Little Lion Man”, hid from my ears for long time while I fell in love with the rest of this album, including the other track you’ll find there…https://myuniversallanguage.wordpress.com/2010/09/29/it-was-not-your-fault-but-mine/ .

So I guess you could call this the year of the banjo or at least its reemergence into the music mainstream. Believe me I’ve been digging it and nobody incorporated it into their music better than Mumford & Sons. As you can see from the rest of my list and the rest to come, if you can do something unique with your sound and still make it catchy and appealing to my ears then I’m probably really going to enjoy it. Now I haven’t heard anything like this…ever. It has its similar qualities to other bands like Flogging Molly or We Were Promised Jetpacks, maybe even a bit of a mix of the two you could say. Which is a good thing cause I like them both. But as a complete sound, nothing like it.

So like I said before, I loved this album long before I’d ever even heard the lead single off of it. You see I don’t listen to the radio…ever. So on a random occasion I did and you could understand how surprised I was to hear a really awesome song on the radio that sounded just like Mumford & Sons that I’d never heard. My first thought was, “Are they already releasing another album so quickly?” Then after a little lookey lou at the album track list, it turns out somehow my iTunes thought it would be funny to just delete a random track or something? Jerk. So “Little Lion Man” or not, this is a great album and you should def should be listening, whether you hate the Banjo or not. Check it.

PS. Check out another post of some other stuff the guys from Mumford & Sons worked on…https://myuniversallanguage.wordpress.com/2010/10/20/im-a-believer/

The Limousines – Get Sharp

Now there are plenty of albums on my list that probably didn’t make many other Top Album lists. But at the least I could find almost all of them on a list or two with at least a mention. In this albums case….nothing. At all. Come on people! This is a GREAT album. I must, however, understand that some bands/albums go under the radar at nobody’s fault but the band or whoever markets that band. I mean if you don’t hear it you can’t like it. One song off an EP back in 09′ got me hooked and had I not heard it I probably would have been in the same boat. Thank goodness it introduced to a band, who in my opinion gave us the 8th best album this year. There are definitely some stand out tracks here. The track off the fortold EP (Scrapbook), “Very Busy People” made it’s way onto the full length for one. Another being, “Internet Killed The Video Star”. You can find my thoughts on those 2 in a previous post here https://myuniversallanguage.wordpress.com/2010/09/20/that-drum-machine-aint-got-no-soul/ . Those two alone carry this album a long way, but no album with 2 great tracks is gonna make my list, especially this high. So trust me the rest of the album stands out as well, including the track you’ll find below. Check it.

Vampire Weekend – Contra

Vampire Weekend did it again. While I didn’t officially have a list 2 years ago, their self titled debut was definitely one of the best albums of 08′.  It put them on the map and they continue to be on said map. Whatev that means. So I’m getting behind on my list so I’m just gonna start throwing something quick together and forget about the full review thing. I mean, what is there to say, the album is fantastic. I don’t know what else needs to be said. If you aren’t listening to Vampire Weekend you have issues, most likely with your ears. It’s just super unique and amazing music.

So below you shall see 1. My fav song, of which I have a shirt with all the lyrics on (Hot Topic thang) and 2. My fav song off the album (live iTunes Session version) that I integrated into the theme of my beer pong team theme song, which obviously is a team of….you guessed it…me and my cousin. Check it.

I Can Make A Mess Like Nobody’s Business – The World We Know

I partially reviewed this album in a previous post, which I’ll link you to in a moment. So combine this and that and you get a semi-review. Either that or prob me just repeating myself, idk cause I’m not gonna read what I wrote previously. This is def a mood album. If I had to pick a top albums for a certain mood, this is my #1 album of the year for relaxation, chillness, sadness, somber, and all other similar synonym like moods you can think of. It just has that feeling. Not the one that brightens your day, but the one that just fits the mood. That will only make sense if you listen, so yeah do it. I would find it very difficult to find an album that has 4 better songs to start off an album. That really isn’t an overstatement either. Listen for yourself. They flow together so well that it is nearly impossible to distiguish where it begins and ends. Yeah, yeah, you can tell, but you get my drift…maybe. A masterpiece of music is probably an overstatement, but it’s on the verge. At least the best I heard all of last year. Now I’m not surprised to see Ace Enders (the singer) putting together such great stuff. He did it in 09′ with Ace Enders and A Million Different People and he did it again here with I Can Make A Mess Like Nobody’s Business. From what I’ve heard he has a few projects coming out again this year and he can release them under any moniker he likes, I’m sure they’ll be amazing. The link is below for more of a review on this album as well as 2 of the other tracks in the amazing beginning to this album. Check it.

Not realizing it, I added an EP to my Top Albums….oops again. Yes that’s my excuse for the delay, I was contemplating what to do. My solution….I’m going to hit you up with my 2 favorite EPs of the year at #11 just to be fair. So check below and ye shall see. Check it.

12.

Kid Cudi – Man On The Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager

Yes I chose this album over the popular choice of Kanye for my favorite hip hop album of the year. There were others that I throughly enjoyed, but as far as hip hop goes this took the cake. Also plagued with the similar fate with pre-releasing basically the entire album before it actually dropped this sits lower on my list then it may have been otherwise. But I can’t deny the amazingness of it. Although it may not seem fair I also have to give Kid Cudi some extra credit for releasing one of if not my all time favorite mixtapes this year as well with, “Cudderisback”. Heck, if that had been actual album it may have rocketed to the top of this list, pure brilliance.

Lydia – Assailants

Girls – Broken Dreams Club

My two favorite EPs of the year. Combined they make up my #11 spot. That’s all I’m gonna say, besides they are both amazing, cause well I made a mistake no need to talk about it further. While I’m on the EP kick I’ll throw you a few of my other favs as well….that includes MNDR – “EPE”, Lights – “Acoustic EP”, and How To Destroy Angels – “How To Destroy Angels” and yeah thats it and I’m sure I’m missing others cause I wasn’t expecting to be an idiot.
