I Can Lift You Up…

6 Feb

First Off….if you are reading this my site has moved here http://myuniversallanguage.com/

Like I promised, here’s what happens when you send me dope music. I post it. So if you make dope music (according to me) then send it to me. If I like it, it’ll find its way onto my blog. Simple as that. Send it here krees10@gmail.com

So usually what I do when someone sends me music, and believe it or not I get a bunch, I give it the 10 second treatment. That’s where I start the track, wait 10 seconds, if it catches my ear, I continue to listen and judge it from there. If it doesn’t I skip to the middle and give it 5 more. If it hasn’t caught my ear at that point, I move on. Harsh? Maybe. But sometimes I have a hard enough time getting a post up in the first place, let alone listen to a bunch of 4 minute tracks. I think its fair to say that 15 seconds of play can give you a pretty good idea if somethings good. Maybe I miss a few good songs here and there, but I’m confident I have a good enough ear to tell whether something is good or not fairly quickly. Let me rephrase that, something I like enough to post on my blog. A lot of the stuff I won’t post is still pretty good, I just can’t get everything up. You understand 🙂

So to start this off right, I thought I’d hit you with something dope. The band, “Capital Cities”. 10 seconds was plenty of time for these guys. Heck, give them 2 and your hooked. I take that back, following the small drum solo (about 1 second) this track blows up. Way up. This beat is the shizz and a perfect mix in of the horns just rocks my world. Now comes the hard part, actually getting someone who can sing  and not ruin all the obvious hard work and skill that went into making this dope beat. Well that’s no problem here either. A nice mixture of great music with great vocals. So if you dig bands like “Empire of the Sun”, “The Limousines”, “Two Door Cinema Club”, and “Dan Black”,  then you’re gonna dig this band too. What do all those bands have in common? They’ve recently blown up and they’ve produced some of my favorite albums over the past 2 years. Soooo, it’s going to be fun to see what’s on the horizon for these guys. I predict big things. Check it.

PS. If you happen to live in my area…Los Angeles…they’re gonna be playing a show at the Troubadour (sweet!) March 19th. I’m gonna try my best to make it out. So maybe you’ll see me bobbin’ my head somewheres.

PSS. I highly recommend you hit up their site here… http://capitalcitiesmusic.com …and grab this track for free.

Matt & Kim – Sidewalks

So here we are. Album of the year. I only hope it’s late release didn’t sway it’s choosing. Then again, a month into the new year and I’m still rocking out to this album almost daily. If there is something that makes an album good then they’ve discovered it. I think what it is, is just plain ole’ fun. As I shuffle through this album all I can think of is how every track is like its own little party in my brain. It’s the type of album where you aren’t going to want to skip through a track to get to your favorite. You aren’t going to automatically go to track 7 because it rocks the hardest. You’re not going to repeat a track because it’s the only one you like. It’s a experience. An entire album experience. Maybe its best to describe it as a bit of a circus. It’s the collective whole that makes a circus so fun (or so says my childhood memories). Every piece is exciting and you can’t wait to see what’s next. There’s the lion tamer, then the chicks jumping around on elephants, then you got the small car full of clowns, and so on and so forth. It’s all exciting and fun in its own little way, but you don’t really want to just go and watch the car full of clowns and be done. Or at least that was my feelings. Maybe you really only love cars full of clowns or maybe you’re terrified of clowns? Whatev. So after this ridiculous explanation of why this is the best album of the year, I’ll just keep it simple, it’s the shizzz. Check it.

PS. I’d wrote something up last night, which miraculously was deleted. So I guess this morning my mind is in a circus mood? Ehhh?!?!

2.

Dan Black – UN (Deluxe Version)

So this album is another one of those albums that technically has been out since 09′, but like I’ve said before, I live in the good ole’ U.S. of A. so therefore I say it came out in 10′. Well, cause it did, in the U.S. So that is why it has made my list. Well that and it’s flippin’ amazing. I also went ahead and chose the Deluxe Version of the album to put on my list. Mainly cause it includes and amazing remix of Symphonies, featuring Kid Cudi. You can check that track out and the rest of the “Symphonies Trilogy” as I like to call it here…https://myuniversallanguage.wordpress.com/2010/10/04/gimme-more-than-the-life-i-see/

Now what to say about this album. Again, and you will find this a common trend in all of my musical likes, this is different. It’s not your typical music and it’s not your typical musician. Dan Black was to 2010 as Miike Snow was to 2009…for me. Idk what that means, but I always think of them together for some reason. I won’t try to explain.  Some of you will understand. This is a great album for somewhat unspeakable reasons. No not cause they are a secret, just cause I can’t really explain why I like it. I mean yeah its good music and yeah I enjoy it. But how it made it all the way to my #2 spot is really an unknown. And I’m not saying it doesn’t deserve to be there. What I’m saying is that it just has an unspeakable quality about it. Some music just does. You can’t pinpoint exactly what makes it better then the others, it just is. That’s Dan Black…for me. Original, catchy, dancey, lyrical, lovely, fun, and other descriptive words. So nothing else left to do but. Check it.

5.

Sleigh Bells – Treats

If there was a more unique album last year that actually didn’t sound like a mumbled jumbled mess of crappy music then please inform me of it. Because, this is quite possibly the most unique sound to come out since….idk maybe the whole MGMT/Vampire Weekend sort of emergence of sound from 08′. Then again you could probably attribute that to a lot of different bands from decades past. As far as Sleigh Bells goes, can you really attribute their sound to something coherent or popular from the past? I can’t, or at least don’t have the musical prowness to claim to know of anything. I have to say that in a lot of ways their uniqueness is their appeal to me. How they are able to take such a RAW sound and make it coherent enough to enjoy and crazy enough to lose yourself in it. I’m starting to sound to hipster for my own good. So to be less so, I’ll just say it ROCKS! Plain and simple. Plenty of people are going to say it’s too crazy or too over the top or too something…but isn’t that what makes it so great. There is a fine line between too much and wayyyyy too much and they pretty much straddle that thing like one of those tight rope walkers across two giant buildings. But they do it none the less. Perfectly.

When I heard their mixture of demo type tracks from back in 09′ I thought…WOW, when they actually get some production behind this stuff it’s going to be crazy good. And… it was. This is a popular pick for a lot of Top Album lists from last year, but while some people are going to pick it just to be cool, I’m going to pick it at my 5 spot cause I frickin’ rocked my ass off to it all day every day for a long period of time. I liked it, I loved it, I cherished it. Well I still do, although a short break is in due order after many a rock out sessions. My two fav tracks can be found here https://myuniversallanguage.wordpress.com/2010/09/24/let-me-say/.  For the crazyness go there, for a more laid back (if you can call it that) check the track here. The Limousines – Get Sharp

Now there are plenty of albums on my list that probably didn’t make many other Top Album lists. But at the least I could find almost all of them on a list or two with at least a mention. In this albums case….nothing. At all. Come on people! This is a GREAT album. I must, however, understand that some bands/albums go under the radar at nobody’s fault but the band or whoever markets that band. I mean if you don’t hear it you can’t like it. One song off an EP back in 09′ got me hooked and had I not heard it I probably would have been in the same boat. Thank goodness it introduced to a band, who in my opinion gave us the 8th best album this year. There are definitely some stand out tracks here. The track off the fortold EP (Scrapbook), “Very Busy People” made it’s way onto the full length for one. Another being, “Internet Killed The Video Star”. You can find my thoughts on those 2 in a previous post here https://myuniversallanguage.wordpress.com/2010/09/20/that-drum-machine-aint-got-no-soul/ . Those two alone carry this album a long way, but no album with 2 great tracks is gonna make my list, especially this high. So trust me the rest of the album stands out as well, including the track you’ll find below. Check it.

Marina & The Diamonds – The Family Jewels

One of my most anticipated albums of last year after hearing “The Crown Jewels EP” and it didn’t disappoint. My fav track off the album was by far “I Am Not A Robot”, but the rest didn’t leave me wanting more. Well as far as that album went, obviously I want some more and hopefully we get something this year. A great overall album and def overlooked by many.

Magic Kids – Memphis

One of the most surprising albums on this list. This album took a while to grow on me, but with every listen I started liking it more and more. A step away from almost everything I heard all year. A very unique sound. Got me back into that old school beach rock sort of sound. A lot of great albums came out this year sporting that sound and this was one of the best.

Top Albums of 2K10 – #19(tie), #18, #17

2 Jan

First Off….if you are reading this you my site has moved here http://myuniversallanguage.com/

Oops. So I totally left off an album and didn’t notice till now. It so happens that album ended up at #7 on my list. So because of this I will be giving you 3 albums today so I can stay on track. So I guess we’ll just call it a tie at #19? So here will be #19 (tie), #18, and #17. Check it.

19.

MIA – MAYA

Here’s the album that snuck into my list last second.  Even jumping a couple others to end up here…apparently tied for 19 or maybe it’s actually 18? Either way it was a great album and just what I’d hoped it would be. I just had to be honest with myself I suppose. MIA isn’t going to appease everyone with this album, probably cause everyone was hoping for another “Paper Planes” type track to take over the world. If you were expecting MIA to somehow go all poppy to appease the masses then that was a stupid assumption and you probably didn’t listen to her entire first album. Not to mention that track was a bit DIFFERENT to begin with. So no surprises with the new album. Cause this was just what I’d expected and just what I’d hoped it would be. Crazy, out there, insane, banging. So it did it for me.

Kanye West – My Beautiful Dark Twisted Nightmare

This one is tough. I’ve seen this album at the top of many lists this year. And I totally agree that it was great. Although it won’t even make it as my top hip hop album of the year? I think what hurt it for me was the whole idea that Kanye would release a track every couple weeks. By the time the album dropped I’d basically heard the entire thing. Sorta killed it for me. Regardless, there are some fantastic tracks on here and I’m glad to see Kanye go back to the style of hip hop that made me fall in love with his stuff in the first place. Now if I could only get him to drop a few more “Monster” esche tracks on his next effort he might find his way to my #1 spot. Just a thought. I will say that “Runaway” was easily the best hip hop track of the year. First time in a while I’ve literally put a track on repeat for over an hour. Just that good.  https://myuniversallanguage.wordpress.com/2010/09/15/lets-have-a-toast/

OK Go – Of The Blue Colour Of The Sky

This album may have etched it’s place in my Top 20 on one song alone (lie). Basically meaning it was easily one of my favorite songs of the year. That song being “This Too Shall Pass”. Lyrically amazing. Musically amazing. Video(s) amazing. Just an amazing song. To me it’s odd to think that, in my opinion, probably the 2 best videos of the year were….for the same song. First, the one everyone has seen with the whole Rube Goldberg setup and second (and my fav) the live version of the song. Both done in one take. Both amazing. But no its place here isn’t really due to one song alone. The whole album flows fantastically and there are some great songs throughout. Just when I thought OK Go would become that poppy artist who has to live off their great videos they go and release a REALLY solid album full of great songs that stand on their own, video or not.

Well like I said…if a dope azz song drops while I’m busy reminiscing 2k10 with my Top Albums I’m gonna drop an extra post here and there. That’s the case here. Whenever LMFAO drops a new track I think it should be shared. This is no different. The track is, “Party Rock Anthem (feat Lauren Bennett & Goon Rock), and it’s the first single for their forthcoming album, “Sorry For Party Rocking”. Another one of my most anticipated albums of 2011. So like always. Check it.

First Off….if you are reading this my site has moved here http://myuniversallanguage.com/

Happy New Year! And what better way to bring in 2011 then with my Top 20 Albums of 2010. This list in no way claims to be the actual Top 20 Albums of the year, but then again who’s list actual is…Pitchfork…not a chance. What it does claim is to be my Favorite Albums of the year. So if you don’t agree…cool. Sorry. So probably the toughest choice of my entire list was picking what albums would make the list and what albums would be left out. That left a tough choice to round out the list and 20 and 19. Just a note, I literally just kicked off Electric President’s album, “The Violent Blue”, from my list and shed a tear in doing so. One of my favorite bands of all time, so let it be known that I’m trying my best to be less biased this year. There’s some quality albums that didn’t make my list, but 1. I didn’t have time to listen to everything I wanted as much as I wanted…sorry The Black Keys & Arcade Fire and 2. There’s only 20 spots and I’m too dang lazy to do a Top 50.

So how this will work is I’ll  give a quick thought on why I enjoyed the album for 20-11 and then maybe for the Top 10 I’ll do a full review of those albums…maybe. If I’ve already featured the band/artist then I’ll link you to that post. Then I’ll give you an extra track off the album that wasn’t in that post for you to check out. So listen here and then click the link and listen some more. So here we go… Check it.

Chromeo – Business Casual

So I’ve never really been into dance music, but this album did it for me. It basically single handedly got me into a completely different genre of music I wasn’t paying attention to. Thank you Chromeo.  https://myuniversallanguage.wordpress.com/2010/10/01/i-say-shes-too-dramatic/

Ben Fold & Nick Hornby – Lonely Avenue

This album convinced me that basically anything Ben Folds does is going to be good. Taking Nick Hornby’s lyrics, Ben Folds throws down a super catchy album that I was listening to constantly after it came out. I’d say this is one of the most underrated albums of the year. You don’t see it on anyones list, which to me is super surprising. It just seems like one of those albums that would have gotten a lot more appreciation then it did. From beginning to end a quality album.
