I Don’t Need You…

12 Feb

First Off….if you are reading this my site has moved here http://myuniversallanguage.com/

Like I always do at this time…I go to my list of bands I want to check out but haven’t had the time. A common occurance if you’ve followed my bloggity. So here I shall go and find something that didn’t automatically catch my ear, but I knew if I gave a chance might do the trick.

And what did I come up with? The band is, “The Colourist”. Immediately the thoughts of Death Cab come to mind when I listen to these guys. And if you can bring up those thoughts and still maintain originality then you’re heading in the right direction in my book. So here is the track, “Oh Goodbye”. And if you’re anything like me, and you like to jump on bands that are fresh and new, then here you go. A band with only an EP to their name. Check it.

I Don’t Need You…

Here’s some new stuff from a band I’ve been listening to for this past year or so. A super rhaspy, but catchy voice. The band is, “The Rural Alberta Advantage” and the new track is, “Stamp“. There is just something super addicting about this guys voice. That’s probably what draws me in. The music is great and all, but without the voice I’m not listening. Oh and the lyrics are pretty on point, so they got going for them as well. You shall see peeps. Grab the new album, “The Departing” on March 1, I think.  And as always, almost always, I’ll include an older track of theirs that I think is pretty awesome as well. Check it.

This Site Has Moved…

8 Feb

http://myuniversallanguage.com/

So the day has come. I’ve got my own site. So I shall now migrate everything over there. Well actually I’ve done that…for the most part. You will recognize the site as it’s pretty much a replication of what you see here. I’ll probably post at both area while you journey over there. So change your bookmarks if you were cool enough to bookmark this site. Update your RSS if you’ve subscribed and if you haven’t…what are you waiting for? And do whatever else you gotta do.

It’s a work in progress, but I want to get everything going over there so it’s quite possible some stuff is not gonna work or whatever. If that’s the case be a pal and shoot me an email so I can fix it 🙂 THANKS!!! (krees10@gmail.com) (ignore every word being mundane and bold in older posts…prob not gonna have the time to fix that 😦 )

Also, be on the look out for a redesign…trying to get a friend to possibly hook me up?!?!?! We’ll see, but Iwanna get this thing looking legit, cause I’m diggin’ sharing music with you guys/gals and want it to be as aesthetic and glorious a look as it is a listen. So bare with me as I get things going, but in the meantime head to the new site from now on!

Oh and here’s a sweet song I’ve been listening to. You know I wouldn’t leave ya hanging. Check it.

First Off….if you are reading this my site has moved here http://myuniversallanguage.com/

Phewwww, a sigh of relief. Now I can back to posting new stuff I find, just how I like it. I’ll be posting some awesome submissions I’ve gotten from a few people here in a couple days so be on the lookout for that. But on a nice bright and sunny Saturday afternoon (I Love Cali), I think I’ll just post some nice beautiful music. You’ve surely heard of them before, but a new track dropped from the Fleet Foxes and I’m really diggin’ it.  Def a good start to a much anticipated album. So here it is along with a refresher for those who haven’t heard of this fantastic band. Check it.

PS. Some of my music isn’t working on past posts, so if you notice that…I’m working on it…actually trying to migrate everything over to my own site here soon. It’s getting frustrating fixing it every couple weeks :/

Freelance Whales – Weathervanes

Oh what to say, what to say about this fantastic speciman of an album. Such a surprising find for me. I believe I found this band on a muscians blog, but it wasn’t a music blog, if you know what I mean. I was hooked from the start. This album probably contains my fav song of the year with, “Generator 1st ^ Floor”, the apitamy of a beautiful song. They just don’t make them better. I don’t think I’ve ever been sooooo longing for a song to continue when it ends. The first time I heard it I was like, “WTF it’s over?” I guess that’s my qualm with it, it’s too short. I dream of a second, third, fourth, or heck even ninth verse….unfortunately I get one. Here’s to hoping they do some sort of extended version on the next album. Then again if you watch the live version below, yes I posted one of my favorite live performances of all time, you shall see, you’ll notice a second verse. But where is the studio version of this? I can’t find it. This upsets me.

Now after hearing that first track you may be expecting this hipsterish chill deep album, but on multiple songs they switch it up with a lot of not so deep stuff. It’s sort of a relief. I’m not sure you’d expect them to throw out a line about “lemon now-or-laters” in the next track, but they do. So they sort of seemlessly integrate deepness with fun lyrics, which I believe adds to the overall appeal of the album. I guess. I’m all for a chill and deep album, but the ability to get the best of both worlds from one is something that makes this album so great. Part of me thinks this entire paragraph made no sense, whatev.

I remember going to see what sort of review this album got on Absolutepunk.com just cause they tend to be fair in most of their reviews. Plus the member ratings tend to be somewhat accurate…somewhat. All I know is I distinctly remember reading some horrible review where this album got like 70 or below out of 100. I wanted to slap whoever reviewed it. Idiot. That being said, I just went back to get some ammo to bash that person here and the review has now got an 89/100. Idk what happened lol, guess someone either smartened up or a better review got put up. Either way, I think the score of 96/100 member rating speaks for itself. It’s great. So yeah. Check it.

PS. Went with both “Generator” songs here, but I really recommend checking out the track “Ghosting” as well (along with the entire album, but if you had to choose only one go with that one), FANTASTIC!

The Drums – The Drums

Reviving a genre. The Beach Boys would be proud, maybe, actually I have no idea, maybe they’d be jealous. Maybe you think I just made a blasphemous statement. Whatev. In my mind and my eyes this is the band that has brought back Beach Rock. Well there were a few bands I featured this year that kind of touched on the sound and did a fantastic job of it too I must say. But if there was one band that hit the nail on the head with the genre, this is it. Maybe to some it’s gimmicky and maybe those people listen to crappy music. Probably both. The Drums don’t just bring back a genre, they also do it justice, or better yet, take something from the past, breath life into it, and then spit shine it up until it looks brand new.

I grew up many a many a many night listening to the Beach Boys. You could bank on an album or two of theirs making its way round the record player at least one time through on the weekend, every weekend. So it’s not like this is something I haven’t been accustomed to hearing my whole life and all of a sudden I’m jumping on this “new” style of music. I know where it comes from, I loved it when I was a kid, and I’ve fallen back in love again today. So here’s to an amazing genre back in my life and amazing band doing it just right. That sorta rhymed. Bam. Check it.

Sleigh Bells – Treats

If there was a more unique album last year that actually didn’t sound like a mumbled jumbled mess of crappy music then please inform me of it. Because, this is quite possibly the most unique sound to come out since….idk maybe the whole MGMT/Vampire Weekend sort of emergence of sound from 08′. Then again you could probably attribute that to a lot of different bands from decades past. As far as Sleigh Bells goes, can you really attribute their sound to something coherent or popular from the past? I can’t, or at least don’t have the musical prowness to claim to know of anything. I have to say that in a lot of ways their uniqueness is their appeal to me. How they are able to take such a RAW sound and make it coherent enough to enjoy and crazy enough to lose yourself in it. I’m starting to sound to hipster for my own good. So to be less so, I’ll just say it ROCKS! Plain and simple. Plenty of people are going to say it’s too crazy or too over the top or too something…but isn’t that what makes it so great. There is a fine line between too much and wayyyyy too much and they pretty much straddle that thing like one of those tight rope walkers across two giant buildings. But they do it none the less. Perfectly.

When I heard their mixture of demo type tracks from back in 09′ I thought…WOW, when they actually get some production behind this stuff it’s going to be crazy good. And… it was. This is a popular pick for a lot of Top Album lists from last year, but while some people are going to pick it just to be cool, I’m going to pick it at my 5 spot cause I frickin’ rocked my ass off to it all day every day for a long period of time. I liked it, I loved it, I cherished it. Well I still do, although a short break is in due order after many a rock out sessions. My two fav tracks can be found here https://myuniversallanguage.wordpress.com/2010/09/24/let-me-say/.  For the crazyness go there, for a more laid back (if you can call it that) check the track here. Blah blah blah….I’m done. Check it.

Watching You Breakdown…

22 Jan

First Off….if you are reading this my site has moved here http://myuniversallanguage.com/

quick break from the list to bring you a new track from one of my favorite groups of all time. You know that one group, the one who can take a violin and incorporate it so seamlessly into a “punk” rock track. That beingYellowcard. Has it really been since 2007 since I’ve heard something new from them? Yes…yes it has! They broke up after their latest album, “Paper Walls”, which is one of my favorite albums of all time…then again so is their album, “Ocean Avenue”. And yet it seems like yesterday since I’d get in my car and drive and drive and drive and blast their music. Soooooo many memories.  So when I heard they were getting back together, you must know I was STOKED…so STOKED…very super STOKED. They most def pick up where they left off with a fantasticnew track, “For You, And Your Denial”. The track just dropped in iTunes so go cop it and then sit calmly (if that’s possible) as you await the release of their new album, “When You’re Through Thinking, Say Yes”, on March 22. Check it.

Two Door Cinema Club – Tourist History

So here’s the album that jumped up above Mumford & Sons to claim it’s spot on my list at #6. This album is easily one of the most complete albums of the year, but something it has going for it that most other complete albums had this year, is how much each track stood out alone. A lot of albums are good because of the way they flow and I’m not saying this one didn’t have that going for it as well. You could say this was an album of singles. By that I mean and I’m not kidding, nearly every song on this album could have been a single. Now what does that mean? Well you know how bands like to pick their most mainstream appealing or best song to release to radio station and whatever other musical outlet…they call that a single. Well I wouldn’t have been in the least bit surprised of them picking nearly any one of these tracks off this album. They all had that pizzazz or appeal that could make them a radio hit. They all had their uniqueness about them. They all stood out on their own. Now having said that, it makes you wonder how this album didn’t make it to the #1 spot on my list. Honestly, I wondered that myself listening to it the other day. I think my conclusion is I usually look at an album as a whole and more then about the music. It’s about the feeling I get. About what it reminds me of. About do I put it on when I’m feeling in a certain mood. I think all  or most the albums above that have a that going for them. This album, however, is more like what I put on when I just wanna listen to some catchy good tunes. Less emotional you could say. There isn’t a problem with that. It surely is a great album and I think if more people had given it a chance it would have made it to the top of others lists as well as mine. I heard a track on a video game the other day, I think NBA 2K11, and was like…”good for them”. So they are getting some recognition that they most def deserve. So go get your hands on this album and be expecting some great things out of this band coming soon. Check the link for a previous post, including a song by Hoodie Allen that samples a Two Door Cinema Club track. Then check a couple other tracks off the album and you can get a sense of what I mean by every song being single worthy. Check it.

The Limousines – Get Sharp

Now there are plenty of albums on my list that probably didn’t make many other Top Album lists. But at the least I could find almost all of them on a list or two with at least a mention. In this albums case….nothing. At all. Come on people! This is a GREAT album. I must, however, understand that some bands/albums go under the radar at nobody’s fault but the band or whoever markets that band. I mean if you don’t hear it you can’t like it. One song off an EP back in 09′ got me hooked and had I not heard it I probably would have been in the same boat. Thank goodness it introduced to a band, who in my opinion gave us the 8th best album this year. There are definitely some stand out tracks here. The track off the fortold EP (Scrapbook), “Very Busy People” made it’s way onto the full length for one. Another being, “Internet Killed The Video Star”. You can find my thoughts on those 2 in a previous post here https://myuniversallanguage.wordpress.com/2010/09/20/that-drum-machine-aint-got-no-soul/ . Those two alone carry this album a long way, but no album with 2 great tracks is gonna make my list, especially this high. So trust me the rest of the album stands out as well, including the track you’ll find below. Check it.
